Foreword and Acknowledgment

There are countless free resources in the world today on GNU/Linux based Operating Systems (OS). This has always been the spirit on which the Open Source community was built. Most of these resources seem disjointed. You would often hear that- user “Ying” tried A-B-C? solution but that same solution didn’t work for user “Me”. Working with Linux needn’t always be so frustrating. The OS has matured enough to reduce this frustration.

The Linux environment should not be intimidating or confusing to the user, but a lot of users still find it intimidating. This Lab Manual aims to ease some of this confusion. It does this by leading the reader through hands on exercises that simulate what would be obtainable in a typical Linux environment.

The Open Source community has made giant steps and advances to make the Linux environment as user friendly as possible. And the community is constantly working on improvements.

This manual has drawn on a lot of resources from the Open Source community .The only new thing done here is that it has articulated these resources into a working set of structured Lab Manuals.

This manual is structured so that the reader will become comfortable in the use of the various tools and the Linux operating System itself, with each progressing lab. The manual also serves as a quick reference guide for common command syntax and usage.

Please remember that this is not another “Linux Text Book”. It is a Lab manual and so therefore it is task oriented. It is hoped that the reader will take something away from trying to accomplish these tasks.
